In just two weeks’ time the winners of the Great British Pub Awards (GBPA) 2024 will be revealed.

The event, which is organised by The Morning Advertiser (MA), will take place at Manchester’s Victoria Warehouse on Tuesday 17 September.

Marking its 25th year, the ceremony will be hosted by TV star and writer Ralf Little, known for his roles in shows such as The Royal Family, Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps and Death In Paradise.

The awards cover a range of categories, from gardens to beer, family pubs and food as well as the best place to watch sport or those supporting their communities and championing sustainability.

Extremely proud

Hundreds of pubs entered the competition, before expert judges whittled it down across two rounds of judging and on-the-road site visits took place this summer.

Editor of The MA Ed Bedington said: “The great British pub is an institution to be proud of and we are extremely proud to be able to recognise and honour some of the best businesses in the country.

“Our finalists have been selected from hundreds of incredible entries from across the nation and we are excited to visit the sites before revealing the winners in September.”

Last year’s event, which was hosted by radio and TV presenter Edith Bowman, saw Cheshire Cat Pubs & Bars pub the Cholmondeley Arms, Cheshire take home the overall title of Great British Pub of the Year as well as the Best Country Pub.

The pub impressed judges with its traditional features, premium food offering and reputation for all things gin.

Boost of confidence

Owner Tim Bird said: “The award has helped us shine a great light on the strength of the rural pub in the UK and we are very honoured indeed to have been able to do this for others to follow."

Other winners from last year included the Gaggle of Geese in Dorchester in the Best Pub Garden category, the Kings Arms in Bexleyheath for entertainment, the Loch & Tyne in Berkshire for food and Stroud Brewery in the sustainability category.

A spokesperson for Stroud Brewery told The MA: “It's such satisfying recognition for the hard work being done by pubs and their staff to provide customers with a welcoming and high-quality experience.

“As most pubs are having to juggle many challenges at the moment, winning an award gives everyone a boost of confidence and is recognition that their hard work is paying off.”
