A microbrewery has opened aiming to both produce unusual and challenging brews and assist pubs to brew their own beer too.

The Blue Ball Brewery in Runcorn, Cheshire, has been founded by Alex Haycraft, who has been brewing in the US for 12 years, and Matt Riley, founder of Home Brew Supermarket, which sells homebrewing kit.

The new venture is a response to bland beers which according to Riley are "cheap, inoffensive and… created by accountants".

Its own range so far includes Black Hawk, a 4.8 per cent blackberry porter, Blonde Bombshell, a 5.2 per cent American Pale Ale and Zeppelin, a 5.5 per cent hefeweizen.

The brewing consultancy side of the business, Beer Republic, will offer advice to pubs on installing microbreweries on site.

Haycraft said: "We're causing a stir in the North West pub trade, with at least eight pubs already signed up for their own brewing facilities."
