The Bulls Head in Repton, Derbyshire, has introduced a new beer-scoring mechanism that allows customers to have more control over what ales are served behind the bar.

The innovative scheme was devised by the pub's freeholder, Richard Pope, and allows people to score each of the guest ales from "poor" to "excellent".

Pope said: "We have three guest ales on at any one time and when someone buys a pint we give them a casino chip, which they then place in the relevant slot in the voting box. People can see which ales are currently being served by going online."

He added: "The people who are in the best position to judge real ale are the real-ale customers — those prepared to part with their hard-earned money for a great pint."

The pub's website produces a table that rates the beers in order of their popularity, and displays the three that are "live" in the pub.
