Daniel Thwaites, the Lancashire brewer and pub operator, plans to open an estate of up to 20 new coaching inns and character hotels under a new brand called Inns of Character within the next five years.

The company, which currently operates an estate of c.370 pubs plus six four-star hotels under its Shire brand, is seeking to create a collection of classic coaching inns and character hotel properties, which will offer excellent food and traditional ales, in addition to accommodation.

The Blackburn-based brewer has appointed property advisor Christie + Co to seek out freehold or long leasehold character properties located across the UK to operate under the brand.

Targeted sites need to offer 15 to 40-plus bedrooms, plus substantial bar and dining areas with up to 100 covers.

It is thought that part of the £77.5m raised from the sale of the group's Stafford Hotel in London, in 2009, will be used to fund the acquisition drive.

The company is also seeking further opportunities to expand its tenanted pub estate, reported M&C Report.
