Brains 45 - a "continental style Welsh beer" launched in 2006 - is being discontinued, the Cardiff-based brewer and pubco has confirmed.

The 4.5 per cent ABV lager, which was the official beer of the Welsh Football Association, has been abandoned because it is no longer "viable", Brains said.

The Brains website describes it as a "well rounded beer that appeals to the drinker looking to experience a mid-ranged ABV product that you would expect to find on the continent".

A spokeswoman said the beer was still available in a "tiny number of pubs" and in shops while stocks last, but brewing of the beer ceased in December 2010.

In a statement, Brains' Richard Davies said: "Innovation and new product development (NPD) within our business is vital to our long term success, 45 has been a profitable brand for us but at current volumes it no longer has a viable role to play in our company's beer portfolio."

Arfur Daley, Wales spokesman for the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), told WalesOnline: "It is not really a surprise - it wasn't a very good beer.

"And it was competing against real ales like Brains bitter and Brains dark. It never really had a niche."
