Vodka sales continue to grow
Vodka sales have increased by nearly 25 per cent over the last five years according to new research.
Figures from Mintel show 79 million litres of vodka were sold in 2008 - worth a total of £1.9bn. Total sales are expected to exceed £2bn by 2013.
Consumer analyst Michelle Strutton said: "Vodka leads spirit sales and growth in the UK, pushing aside the recession and overall falling alcohol consumption.
"Strong appeal among young drinkers and both budget and premium growth is keeping the category buoyant during the economic downturn.
"Vodka has done particularly well at keeping the category contemporary and exciting."
Overall, the market for all alcoholic drinks in both the on and off trades grew just 3.5 per cent between 2003 and 2008.
In that period overall sales of spirits have slumped 7.6 per cent.
But according to Mintel vodka sales have soared by 23 per cent and the drink is regularly enjoyed by 35 per cent of Britain's drinkers.
Michelle added: "As vodka has moved up-market, a shift, albeit niche, has occurred from consumption via shots or with mixers such as coke or Red Bull to more sophisticated cocktails and long serves."
