More than 50 breweries are now using the Cyclops cask ale tasting guide.

Leicestershire based brewer Everards developed the Cyclops system 18 months ago in conjunction with Camra.

It uses symbols to categorise type, colour, smell and taste on a scale of one to five.

A total of 54 breweries, each with an average of eight brands, have been through the accreditation programme and are now using Cyclops.

"More and more consumers are becoming aware of Cyclops and are using it to assist and improve their enjoyment of cask ale," said Everards commercial director David Bremner.

"It has also become an invaluable tool for licensees and bar staff alike and we hope that further breweries will sign up in 2008."

Bremner said that there had been a "second wind" following the decision of Punch, Mitchells & Butlers and Waverley TBS to use Cyclops to market their own guest ale programmes.

Bremner added: "The only noticeable absentees now are the global drinks companies responsible for so much of the decline of the cask ale category in the last 10 years, Coors, InBev and Scottish and Newcastle.

"We're hoping they will get in touch soon."
