The Greene Man

Newton Abbot, Devon

Agent: Christie+Co

First-time licensee Justin Sheppard is enjoying life behind the bar at the Greene Man. A local to the area for 30 years, he formerly worked in the clothing industry.

"Trade's certainly on the up according to the books and the regulars," he said. "I'd estimate that turnover has increased by 30% since I came in. I'd say it's mostly because I'm a people person, I enjoy being behind the bar and I think the regulars are pleased that I'm here now."

"The pub is a little dated - it looks about five to 10 years old," Sheppard continued. He plans to invest several thousand pounds of his own money in general improvements and will consider approaching landlord Punch Taverns for support if the initial changes boost trade.

Sheppard will make some minor interior changes before moving on to transform the outside area into a "town-centre oasis". He is also looking to introduce a simple food offer of light bites at lunchtimes, aimed mostly at regulars and nearby workers. He is also planning to introduce real ales.

He added: "I'm looking to take on a few members of staff for the busier nights, younger females that will hopefully attract more of their own. I'm also planning to open earlier in the morning to serve coffee."
