Cellar cooling breakdowns have soared by as much as 54 per cent as the recent heatwave has put pressure on equipment.

Technical services firm Innserve, which covers 98,000 of the UK's 160,000 licensed premises, has seen maintenance call-outs leap from an average 1,300 a day to 2,000 during the hottest periods of July, mainly due to cooling breakdowns.

"In an average pub with eight beer taps, losing the cooling during a busy period in a heatwave could mean up to £1,000 per hour lost in profit," warned Innserve director of strategy Dan Unwin.

"Warm weather always puts extra load on cooling systems and in pubs that's even more true as people demand cold refreshing drinks. Also, many outlets can double their trade in hot weather as customers fill beer gardens, terraces and patios.

"All this means extra stress and strain on pub cooling equipment."

Licensees can take some simple steps, though, to reduce the risk of breakdown. For Innserve's top 10 tips go to this website's Business Builder section.
