My plan for the ban
Manager Janet Johnston-Godfrey, the Headlands, Northampton
PUB OWNERSHIP: Charles Wells.
ACTION TAKEN: A new cover was installed over the patio area at the front, while temporary wooden panels, acting as wind breaks, were fitted at the side. The new structure has been painted the same colour as the roof so it blends in. In addition, two infra-red heaters and lights were attached under the roof. Johnston-Godfrey, who manages the pub on behalf of its tenants, said it was decided not to use free-standing heaters because these would be easier to vandalise or steal. In order to make the new area more attractive, the manager wants to see plants such as ivy adorning the pillars and maybe the roof. "At the moment it's a bit like a bus shelter. However, once it has plants growing around it will look much more welcoming," she said.
COST: Around £5,000, paid for entirely by Charles Wells.
ANY PROBLEMS? The revamp has been relatively trouble-free, but Johnston-Godfrey predicts the biggest problems will come when the ban arrives next summer. The pub serves no food and around 80% of its customers smoke, so she expects large numbers of people will shelter in the relatively small space outside.
ADVICE FOR OTHER LICENSEES: "Start it soon. Get something up and running, even if it's very basic. At least we are ready for the ban."
