Proud of Your Staff: Wateredge Inn, Cumbria

The team at the family-run Wateredge Inn in Ambleside, Cumbria, are the latest to be nominated for The Publican's Proud of Your Staff initiative.

Being situated on the edge of Lake Windermere in the Lake District, the 25-strong team are kept busy by a regular stream of visitors.

The Cowlap family have owned the Wateredge Inn for 25 years, and have run it as a freehouse for the last five, but they have always relied on their dedicated staff to help them operate the business. "They are all absolutely brilliant in helping us run things on a day-to-day basis," says joint-owner Scott Cowlap. "A lot of our customers come here especially for the good service they get from them."

The pub gets particularly busy during the summer months, with passengers from Windermere boat trips stopping for a drink and something to eat.

"Sometimes we have around 400 people getting off a boat at one time - and that's a lot of people to keep happy," adds Scott. "It's a major task, but fortunately my staff are always up to the challenge."

But he reserves a particular mention for the pub's chef Paul Webster. Scott explains: "He cooks everything from fresh and when you are doing hundreds of meals a day, that's quite an achievement."
