A West Yorkshire village inn complete with a resident ghost is up for grabs.

The Spread Eagle in Darrington, near Pontefract, was formerly a coaching inn that served the Great North Road, once the haunt of highwaymen and a route for stagecoaches.

Christine Cody-Owen, of the Leeds office of Christie & Co, said: 'Staff and customers have noticed moved glasses, bottles dropped on the floor and other unusual happenings. Some customers have actually seen the ghost fishing.

The property comprises a dining area to seat 35 with a round wooden bar, a more intimate dining area suitable for parties of 15, an upstairs function room for 40, three-bedroom owner's accommodation, beer patio and a large car park.

'The Spread Eagle is a fine example of a traditional English country inn where good food is served in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

'The business has a great reputation as a drive-to destination as the village is well served by a major road network, including the A1, just half a mile away, and junction 33 of the M62, just two miles away. Pontefract, with its popular racecourse, is also within two miles.

'Our client, John Goodchild, has been landlord of the Spread Eagle for just over a year and is selling due to other business commitments. His departure is nothing to do with the ghost, who we are assured is friendly!' she said.

Christie & Co is seeking £155,000 for the lease, which runs until June 2012.
