Pubs are being urged to join the party and start planning for the 200th anniversary celebrations of Nelson's victory at Trafalgar.

Running from October 21 to 23, Trafalgar Weekend will be the culmination of this year's Trafalgar Festival, featuring celebrations up and down the country.

Trafalgar Weekend chairman Bruno Peek said: "Pubs should put out the bunting and fly the flag for Nelson. We want them to host Trafalgar breakfasts, lunches and parties.

"Nelson saved our bacon - let's celebrate with bacon at an English breakfast!"

Mr Peek, who played a leading role in the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002, said pubs' involvement in the celebrations at a traditionally quiet time of year would be vital to the weekend's success.

"The involvement of pubs is very important for all of us, because of their place at the heart of their communities," he said.

Spirit has committed most of its 145 Chef & Brewer venues to the celebrations. Pubs will be lighting beacons, serving up special English dishes and some barstaff will be in fancy dress.

Jane Waugh, operations director at Spirit's Chef & Brewer chain, commented: "Chef & Brewer pubs are at the heart of their communities and serve great British food. This is just the sort of event that everyone will really get involved in."

Mr Peek asked if any pubs hosting events could register at www.trafalgarweekend.co.uk.

A number of brewers are introducing celebratory beers, including:

  • Gales - Trafalgar 200 - an updated version of its Trafalgar seasonal beer, specially brewed for the anniversary
  • Hook Norton - an as yet unnamed 5.2 per cent IPA-style seasonal ale
  • Coors - Victory at Sea - a limited edition bottle-conditioned ale with proceeds going to the Royal National Lifeboat Institute
  • Adnams - Flagship - a seasonal summer beer which is being relaunched for the 200th celebrations.
