Romsey Pubwatch is up for a Home Office award after drink-related crime fell by more than 50% since its inception six months ago.

Romsey MP Sandra Gidley nominated the pubwatch for a Taking a Stand Award which recognises steps taken by members of the public to combat anti-social behaviour.

"What impressed me most was that the licensees joined together to take a hard line against the growing behavioural problems at kicking-out time," said Gidley. "It has made a difference."

The scheme started in May under the guidance of Sergeant Barbara Hardcastle and so far bans have been issued to eight people and warning letters to a further nine. Seven pubs joined the original scheme but that number has now risen to 16.

Chairwoman Sarah Dormer, licensee of the Old House at Home, said the scheme had been a success because licensees were now in constant dialogue with each other.

"We meet once a month and are in constant phone dialogue," Dormer said. "We've found we like talking to each other and know that if we ban someone, everyone else will too."

And she paid tribute to Sgt Hardcastle: "I have to say that she has been fantastic. This would never have got off the ground without her."

The winners of the awards will be announced during December.
