Two more towns in England are to introduce Alcohol Free Zones in an effort to crack down on drunken behaviour on the streets.

Hertsmere Borough Council in Hertfordshire put a zone in place in Borehamwood town centre from January 31, to tackle the growing problem of public drunkenness.

Police officers and newly introduced police community service officers will have powers to confiscate booze from anyone drinking on the street. Failure to obey the officer could result in arrest.

If successful the scheme could roll out to other town centres across the borough such as Potters Bar, Radlett and Bushey, the council stated.

Greenwich Council in South East London has also announced a town centre booze ban. Cans and bottles of drink can be confiscated and persistent offenders could be liable for prosecution and a fine of £500.

Greenwich and Borehamwood follow towns including Croydon, Stoke, Brighton and Newquay in banning town centre boozing, a move that has been welcomed by the trade.
