Pub Awards: Best Turnaround Winner - The White Mare, Beckermet, Cumbria

The White Mare in the north-west of England, is the first site taken on by husband and wife Iain and Dianne Irving (pictured with Jean-Christophe Novelli on the opening day).

The couple knew the area well and scoped out the pub with a view to taking it on, and found they were the only customers on a Saturday night.

The pub was renowned for being dingy and unwelcoming. Before a joint investment with Star Pubs & Bars, villagers had stopped visiting the outlet. It’s grown from a pub, which was not used much by the community, to a central hub hosting events such as weddings and funerals.

A site that had struggled financially for a number of years is now thriving, with weekly turnover increasing 10-fold.

Offers

The pub now has extensive top-of-the-range family-friendly entertainment and food offers, and the ambitious licensees plan to solidify their position as a community hub by selling newspapers, essentials and takeaway coffees.

The kitchen is not afraid of a challenge, having attempted to break the record for the world’s largest sausage following devastating flooding in the area, while also serving Cumbrian tapas and tripe.

The stunning bedrooms complete the outstanding business, with a contemporary design in the idyllic Cumbrian setting at the south of the Peak District.
