Publican Awards Winners: Best Tenanted/Leased Pub Company (201+ sites), sponsored by Kuehne & Nagel - Greene King Pub Partners

There’s a real sense of drive within the Greene King Pub Partners team, and judges felt there was real evidence of a shift in tone when it came to operator relationships, with the company seeking to work more truly as a partnership with tenants.

There’s been a heavy investment into developing its business development managers (BDMs), particularly when it comes to nurturing multiple operators, and that investment is clear to see with the company performing consistently strongly at events such as the ALMR’s Ops Awards.

The company has also been working with Birmingham University to develop a year long diploma course for its BDMs, which is really helping to pay back into the business, inspiring the managers to help develop their operators even further.

A greater flexibility towards sales of its own beers is also helping, giving operators the chance to develop thriving, sustainable businesses that benefit all. This, combined with Greene King’s joint venture, turnover-based agreements, is seeing the company helping to drive real change into the tenanted and leased area.

That change is helping to foster real innovation, one clear example of this is the development of a new, award-winning gin product, with the company helping to fund and develop a gin distillery in a Norfolk-based pub, while another venture has seen one London-based multiple operator create a thriving micro-brewery operation which is really starting to hit its stride. On top of this, a strong track record of good investment throughout its estate, particularly when it comes to outdoor space, is clear to see.

Strong financial figures help to back up the picture that this is a pub company that is really making all the right moves and driving growth through a partnership approach that is setting standards for the rest of industry to follow.
