More than 70 steaks from across the world were entered into the awards, which were arranged by the Publican’s Morning Advertiser’s sister title GlobalMeatNews . com.
The winning steak came from a cow bred on Willow Tree Farm, Australia, by Jack’s Creek and was entered into the competition by meat supplier Albers from Dusseldorf in Germany.
‘Quite a journey’
After winning the award, the company’s owner Frank Albers said: “It has been quite a journey and is the culmination of 15 years seeking steak perfection.
“The steak we entered was quite unique. Our Wagyu contains just the right amount of marbling and is very heat resistant, which helps when cooking.”
Along with the winning steak, which was 30 months old and grain fed for 450 days, a judging panel named a shortlist of 10 other gold medal award winning steaks and 17 silver medal winners.
GMN editor Rod Addy said: “Whilst the standard of steak was by no means tough, the judging process definitely was. It was a very difficult decision, but our congratulations go to Albers for the Wagyu cross.”
The 10 other gold medal winning steaks were:
- Branded Beef, Brisbane, with its 24 months old Wagyu cross raised on grass and finished on grain.
- Whyalla Farm, Queensland, with a 22 months old Black Angus, 200 day grain-fed beast.
- Rangers Valley Cattle Station, New South Wales, with a 27 months grain-fed Angus.
- One Earth Farms Corp’s 16 month Angus.
