Wanted: People to help build a pub by hand

Many of us have thought about starting our own pub after one too many but a mysterious group in Manchester has taken it one step further by starting to build a pub by hand.

Although still in the very early stages, the group is planning to build the pub, which will be called the Pilcrow, using traditional construction crafts, fully traceable materials and crowd-sourced labour.

Writing on its Blood, Sweat and Beers blog, the Pilcrow team said: “Up here in Manchester we are building a pub. This won’t be quick and it won’t be easy.”

By their own admission, the shadowy group have a plan, a location and an architect-but not much else.

“The things we still need include but are by no means limited to: a site manager, a project photographer, a joiner, an electrician, a plumber, an upholsterer, a dry stone waller, a web designer, a stone mason, a digital partner, a brewery partner, a tiler, a blacksmith, a glazier, a ceramicist, a sign writer, a screen printer, a bell founder, 300 volunteers to help us build the thing.

"On reflection, we don't really have that much in the bag."

Despite having very little finalised, the group says they are ‘100% sure’ the pub will get built.

Every stage of the pub’s process will be documented on the Pilcrow pub blog, with the hope of providing a ‘how to guide to building your own pub, a sort of Haynes manual for DIY masochists.’

You can also follow progress via the Pilcrow's twitter account.
