Hot Shots: Are you a pub trade rising star?
One of the biggest challenges the pub trade faces is attracting new talent and convincing people that the sector offers exciting and viable careers. The Publican’s Morning Advertiser (PMA) wants to meet that challenge head-on and showcase the diversity of careers the pub trade offers — and highlight those making a name for themselves.

Our new Hot Shots initiative is part of a wider focus on skills and careers in the trade that the PMA is undertaking to help change perceptions and celebrate those rising stars.

Our hope is that these Hot Shots prove to be the next generation of industry leaders, becoming high flyers and inspiring others to follow.

Anyone from the wider on-trade world can enter — or be nominated — the only stipulation being that they are aged 30 or under on 1 February 2016. We’re after self-motivated and dynamic pub operators, general managers, bar supervisors, chefs, BDMs, marketers, brand managers or business ops specialists, who are making an impact in the sector and on track for stellar careers.

Those making the list will be profiled in a future special issue of the PMA, as well as online, and we will keep a close eye on their career in the trade, regularly revisiting their progress.

Profile-raising

PMA deputy editor Mike Berry said: “Those of us working in and close to the trade know about the diverse and fulfilling range of careers the sector can offer. We also know there are brilliant individuals running successful businesses or contributing positively to the success of pubcos and suppliers.

Are you a Hot Shot?
■ Do you run your own successful pub?
■ Work in the trade and making a positive difference in your job?
■ Aged 30 or under?
■ Looking to boost your profile and career?

“Our aim with Hot Shots is to recognise those individuals, find out what makes them tick and what their hopes for the future might be. By raising their profile and connecting them with other individuals on track for success, we hope they will, in turn, inspire others working to further their careers in the trade.”

Nominees will also be invited to the PMA’s inaugural Pub Skills Summit in July, attended by senior industry figures.

The summit offers our Hot Shots an opportunity to network with industry chiefs and a chance to build relationships with the other rising stars on the list — often holding wholly different jobs and responsibilities within the sector.

How it works

The PMA’s Hot Shots will be drawn from a combination of people self-nominating or being nominated by others. There are only two set criteria: the person nominated must work in the on-trade; and they must be aged 30 or under on 1 February 2016.

Entering is simple. All we ask for is the name, age and job title of the individual being nominated, details of the person doing the nominating, and an explanation as to why they deserve to be a Hot Shot (no more than 300 words) including how they have made a positive contribution to the business. Those self-nominating must support their entry with testimonials from a third party or manager.

The PMA team will select the very best entries and reveal the industry Hot Shots later this year.
