Campaigners fighting to save Somersham’s the Duke of Marlborough say they are ‘determined’ to reopen the pub as they prepare to raise the £350,000 needed to buy it.

The group need to sell 7,000 shares at £50 each to buy the pub, which was closed by private landlords on Christmas Day last year. Concerns have grown that the current owners, who are supportive of the campaign, will turn the Duke of Marlborough into houses if they aren’t able to sell it as a pub.

Local Sarah Caston, who has led the charge to save the pub, said: “We’re convinced we can do it. There’s a compelling case for the business. All our research shows there will be extensive support for the newly re-opened pub. People really want a vibrant social atmosphere and by offering an enticing menu and putting on the right events, custom will be attracted from far and wide.

“Our business plan has been scrutinised by experts across the industry, and there’s real confidence in our proposals and ability to deliver.”

She added: “When we raise our voices about the Duke, we’re raising them for all rural pubs at risk. A new age is emerging, one in which people are grouping together to make a difference. With lots of social media activity from well-wishers and financial support from those able to offer it, we can do it. Every single contribution matters.”

Shares for the pub will be available on Crowdfunder from early September, with investors from across the UK welcome.
