JDW founder Tim Martin leads Brexit celebrations
JD Wetherspoon founder Tim Martin has led celebrations from Brexit campaigners in the industry after Britain voted to leave the EU.

The Leave camp claimed a narrow majority of 51.9% in yesterday’s referendum, and it remains to be seen what impact the momentous move will have on the industry.

The majority of licensees, it would appear, have their wish after a PMA poll found its readers support Brexit.

And JD Wetherspoon's founder hailed the results as a day which will 'enhance freedom and security'.

Anxious

“Some people will now be anxious, but concentrating on these immensely important factors will provide reassurance," he said.

“Anxiety about the economic effects of independence during the campaign was misplaced.”

Martin has donated to the Leave campaign, printed 700,000 Brexit beer mats and visited JDW pubs up and down the country to encourage customers to force a victory.

Independence

He continued: “The UK will thrive as an independent country, making its own laws, and we will work with our good friends and neighbours in Europe and elsewhere to ensure a positive outcome for all parties.

“The most important factor now is to work together for our mutual benefit.

“On a practical level, from my experience of running a business, the key factor now is to avoid the appearance and the reality of rushing to ‘do a deal’ with the EU.

“There is plenty of time and the UK is in an immensely strong position.

“A period of calm, reflection and discussion will be beneficial.”

Social

But not all in the industry were convinced.

Others simply wanted to encourage customers to use their right to vote.

Pubs also used their chance to encourage disappointed Remain voters to drink their troubles away.
