BrewDog UK sales rose by 97% in 2016

BrewDog's total UK sales soared by 97% last year and annual turnover was up 60%, making the Scottish brewer one of the fastest growing craft beer brands in the world.

Punk IPA remained the craft beer with highest sales in the UK, which rose by 130% according to data from Nielsen, and the brewer’s Dead Pony beer grew by 157%, making it the third most sold craft beer in the UK.

Future Trends: Beer and Cider headline speaker confirmed

Throughout 2016, BrewDog shipped 214,000hl of beer and 65m bottles of beer were shipped worldwide.

The beer makers also unveiled a new 300hl brewing site, adjacent to its brewery in Ellon, Scotland.

Not a sell-out

In April this year, the Scottish brewer and operator was valued at £1bn, following a £213m investment from TSG Consumer Partners and plans to expand its brewery and bars even further this year.

Co-founder James Watt told The Morning Advertiser the £213m deal, which meant selling 22% of the company was not a sell-out.

He said: “It was a minority deal so if TSG owns 22.3% of our business, I remain the single largest shareholder meaning we are still free to run the company exactly as we wish.”

Global expansion plans

As part of its growth, BrewDog opened eight new bars over the course of 2016, including Norwich, Southampton and Berlin and announced a turnover of £72m.

It launched a bar in Estonia in April this year, as part of its global expansion plans, which made it one of the country’s first dedicated craft beer venues.
