BrewDog U-turn on Lone Wolf pub name row

BrewDog has blamed its lawyers after it came under fire for making a Birmingham pub change its name by threatening legal action.

Owners of the Lone Wolf, now the Wolf, Constitution Hill, in Snow Hill, Joshua and Sallie McFadyen said they were told to change their pub’s name or face a legal battle because it shared the name of BrewDog’s spirits brand, Lone Wolf.

The venue opened in January this year but registered the company as Lone Wolf Pubs on 31 July 2015 while looking at sites.

BrewDog co-founder James Watt tweeted: “Our lawyers got a bit trigger happy.

“We are happy for the Lone Wolf Bar in Birmingham to keep using the name.”

Not had an official response

Watt also offered to send the bar free cases of Lone Wolf gin and vodka.

However, the pub’s co-owner Joshua McFadyen told The Morning Advertiser he hadn’t officially heard from anyone at BrewDog.

He said : “It is still in the air in our opinion. We have not heard any official response. Our solicitor has not been in contact with theirs.

“We have not spoken to anyone at BrewDog, they didn’t even tag us on Twitter."

Too little, too late

Joshua continued: “The tweet was a month too late as we have already changed the name.

“We are still ongoing with them in terms of the solicitors so we are waiting to hear back from them.”

He also commented on Watt’s tweet of offer to send free cases of BrewDog’s spirit brand.

Joshua added: “We don’t think it is appropriate that we would sell the products for them.”

Twitter users took to social media to voice their anger over the Scottish brewer’s actions and called for compensation for the pub to cover rebranding costs.
