The blaze at the Sussex Yeoman pub in Palatine Road, Worthing was attended by four fire engines who used hose reels to tackle the fire internally and externally to prevent it from spreading.
A social media post yesterday from West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service (Sunday 12 January) said: “We are currently dealing with a fire at the Sussex Yeoman pub in Palatine Road, Worthing.
“Four fire engines are at the scene. Please avoid the area.”
Significant damage
The fire and rescue service confirmed they were called at 5.25am and firefighters were faced with a “substantial fire involving the staff entrance porch that had broken through to the main building”.
Furthermore, a spokesperson for Sussex Police confirmed no one was hurt in the incident but the fire caused “significant damage to the building”.
The police also revealed detectives were investigating the cause of the blaze as deliberate and are carrying out enquiries.
This morning (Monday 13 January), fire crews from Worthing and Shoreham returned to the pub to extinguish a small fire that had reignited in the roof space however, the fire is now out and there were no casualties.
Extremely grateful
A spokesperson for the Sussex Yeoman said: “We are extremely grateful for the swift actions of the pub team and emergency services after a fire broke out at the Sussex Yeoman.
“Most importantly, no one was injured. We need to fully assess the damage to the building and will remain closed for the time being.
“The Sussex Yeoman is an important part of the community and we appreciate people’s understanding.
“We are fully supporting the pub team and look forward to welcoming customers back when the time is right.”
