Hydes launches retro car manual-inspired beer range for 2025

MA The Cask Project

Salford-based brewer Hydes has announced its new product ranges for 2025 with some its new designs inspired by the 1960s and 1970s Haynes automotive manual covers.

As seen with the 2024 range, the 18-strong range for 2025 includes six cask ales as part of its bi-monthly vintage offering and 12 seasonal guest ales.

The vintage range comprises historic brews recreated and influenced by the original Hydes Anvil range, which the brewer said continues to take the historic retro-styling of Hydes pump and bottle clips from the past as inspiration, which proved popular with customers last year.

Adopting the brewery’s original Anvil Brand name, the range sees a varied selection of ales on cask introduced throughout the year including Hydes XPA (4.0% ABV), Hydes Mild (3.4% ABV), Hydes IPA (4.4% ABV), Hydes Red (4.5% ABV), Hydes Stingo (6.0% ABV) and Hydes Imperial (5.2% ABV).

Popular guidebooks

To accompany the ales, Hydes has created retro ’60s and ’70s-inspired designs, featuring the Hydes Anvil brewery branding to feature on bar pump clips, beer and drip mats and posters.

The seasonal range includes a range of 12 ales that celebrate the beloved retro stylings of the Haynes automotive manuals for a classic range of cars from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s with a range inspired by the popular guidebooks.

Last year’s range was based on classic British TV programmes.

The range includes ales inspired by the distinctive manuals for the Mini Cooper, Austin Princess, Ford Sierra, Ford Capri, Audi Quattro, VW Beetle, Porsche Carrera, Triumph Herald, Austin Allegro, Ford Cortina, Vauxhall Cavalier and Morris Mariner.

Hydes said the first themed ales inspired by the manuals to be introduced are The Cooper, a 3.9% ABV dark session ale for January; The Princess, a “refreshingly regal” 4.2% ABV pale ale in February; The Sierra a 4.5% ABV American red beer for March; and April welcomes The Capri, a 4.6% ABV Golden IPA.

Fond memories

Hydes managing director Adam Mayers said: “Fresh for 2025, we’re proud to introduce our new range, which combines fond memories of design nostalgia linked to the brewery in the ’60s and ’70s with our rich north-west brewing heritage through our Vintage range alongside a contemporary range of a dozen varied ales themed around the retro stylings of the much-loved Haynes manuals, widely considered to be timeless design classics.

“This celebration of popular British culture follows last year’s range inspired by classic British TV programmes, which struck a strong nostalgic chord with customers who responded well to the playful, fun nature of the ales.

“There is a strong emotional resonance with the Haynes manuals and this proved to be the inspiration of our themed seasonal range for this year.

“Many people will have a fond and nostalgic connection with the hugely popular manuals and this will hopefully stimulate lots of conversation between older and younger drinkers and stir happy memories for many. We can’t wait for drinkers to sample these distinctive, memorable new brews.”
