Josh & Holly Eggleton open new pub
The duo have teamed up with life-long school friends and fellow operators Lottie & Josh Bryant, who are also siblings, to launch the new site.
The pub opened on Friday (15 November) as part of phase one where the Pelican aims to return to the local community.
Then, in the spring/summer of next year, 10 bedrooms will be unveiled, which will have en-suite bathrooms and king-size beds including some rooms with roll-top baths.
New look
The Pelican will be an extension of its sister site, The Pony in the same village. Overnight guests will be able to move between the two venues seamlessly either on bicycles or a free shuttle service.
Plans include experiential stay packages around the Pony’s restaurant, gardens and cookery school.
After a restoration and renovation, the Pelican, which was first established in 1615, is lined with local vintage photos, showcasing Chew Magna’s history alongside an open fire and tall original sash windows.
Outside, the pub has been repainted in a dark green while the courtyard to the rear will have planters and outside seating.
New lease of life
Josh and Holly Eggleton, who in addition to the Pelican and the Pony Chew Valley, also run Salt & Malt in the same village, the Kensington Arms and Root in Bristol as part of The Pony Group, said: “We have always wanted to have accommodation as part of The Pony family, it has been an aspiration of ours for years and we’ve kept a lookout for the right location.
“We used to go to the Pelican as kids and have fond memories of it so it’s a natural extension for us to give it a new lease of life while growing The Pony experience beyond the restaurant.”
Lottie & Josh Bryant have been in hospitality for a number of years and went to school with Josh and Holly.
On the Pelican, they said: “Having run a pub in the valley for the past five years, we’re excited to be teaming up with old friends to bring something new to Chew Magna.
“We share Josh and Holly’s love for hospitality and for the Chew Valley area so teaming up on this project has been the most rewarding experience and we can’t wait to welcome people through the door.”
