George and Louise Greenaway first opened the site back in 2017. Initially trading solely as a microbrewery, the husband-and-wife duo soon saw the huge potential for opening the pub and have since expanded the business to include an outdoor kitchen and shop.
Judges were impressed with the Tap’s passion for real ale and brewing as well as the businesses approach to staff training, cellar management and dedication to putting Tamworth on the map when it comes to beer.
Solid reputation
The 16th century Staffordshire pub, on Tamworth’s Market Street, boasts a selection of more than 14 rotational keg beers and eight cask ale hand pulls as well as the operator’s own award-winning beer, Whopper, a 6.5% IPA.
Home-made snacks including sausage rolls and sandwiches, are also available at the bar and outdoor kitchen as well as a wide variety of wine and spirits.
In addition, the Tap offers a range of events, from cinema evenings to paint and sip classes as well as regular live music and comedy. There is even an annual bat-watching evening hosted in the well-kept and spacious garden.
Having gained a solid reputation in the area, the Tamworth Tap has been recognised with a multitude of national awards in recent years, including Best Pub Garden at the 2022 Great British Pub Awards and The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Pub of the Year (POTY).
Incredible staff
Speaking to The Morning Advertiser (MA) earlier this year after the business was crowned POTY for the second year in a row, Greenaway said the Tap’s success was down to a “combination of things”, including “Incredible staff” and the support it receives from the local community.
He continued: “[The staff] are the reason a lot of people come in; for their smiling face, professionalism, their energy, expertise, knowledge and attention to detail. They never stop, they always give 110%.
“That’s the first thing a customer wants to see when they walk in, a smiling face and someone with beer knowledge.”
