'I was lucky!'

As the McElhinney family celebrate more than three decades in the UK pub trade, the MA speaks to founder Jack, and son Ryan, to find out the secrets to their success.

Starting out with the Kings Arms in Waterloo, Windmill Taverns have come a long way since its creation by Jack McElhinney over 30 years ago.

The MA's Ed Bedington caught up with Jack and son Ryan, to find out how the trade had changed for the family, where things are now heading as they prepare to expand their Mac & Son's concept and what are there secrets to three decades of pub trade excellence.

The family owned group runs five sites across the Southwark and south London areas. Alongside the Kings Arms, the business has the Ring Jack's Bar, Mc&Sons in Borough and a new Mc&Sons site which recently opened in Vauxhall.

Despite being in his 82nd year, Jack says he has no intention of stepping away from the business, and Ryan sees strong expansion possibilities in the Mc&Sons brand, with a potential expansion out into the middle east in Dubai.
