Inflated energy prices force permanent pub closure
In a Facebook announcement, a spokesperson said: “We really hoped to never have to type these words, but unfortunately, we have made the decision to permanently shut our doors in about a month’s time.
“This decision has not come lightly but it is one that needed to be made. If it wasn't for our pride and love of the venue, it would have been made earlier.”
The team would “love it” if customers could come and support the pub in its last few weeks while it rolled things back so that its staff had places to find new homes. “If you are aware of any venues that are looking for fantastic staff then please let us know so we can pass it on to them,” the spokesperson added.
They also took the time to remind people to support independent businesses where possible: “There are so many places near us that serve such an important place in the community that will also be struggling with the high rents and inflated energy prices.”
Future plans
The team is currently having talks about whether moving its kitchen into the Shooting Star would be a viable, but the decision was still on the table.
The spokesperson concluded: “A massive thank you is due to everyone that has supported us over the years and to all our staff past and present for breathing such life into the place. We're sorry if we let anyone down but at least we have some great memories to go out with.”
Guests took to the comments to express their disappointment. One said: “This one hurts, as the Black Phoenix has always been a safe haven for me and the best pub about. If I am ever heading to town for food or a drink with a mate, this is my go to spot."
'Amazing pub'
"I have brought friends from across Europe to visit and they have always left satisfied and wanting to go back. I don’t know where I will go now.”
Another added: “Black Phoenix is one of my favourite pubs in Southampton. The amazing food, pint cocktails and eclectic mix of people make for an amazing night out at the weekend or a chilled evening mid-week.
“Factor in the amazingly allergy friendly menu (I’m gluten and lactose intolerant) and you win hands down every time. I’m just sorry other people don’t see it to keep you busy enough to stay open.”
