Greene King Tub2Pub raises more than £5k
The initiative saw a “record-breaking” 2,900kg of empty plastic sweet and biscuits tubs collected across the pubco’s estate, saving 25,000 plastic tubs from landfill as well as the funds raised for the multiple operator’s charity partner, Macmillan Cancer Support.
Greene King supply chain director Vance Fairman-Smith said: “This is a fantastic effort and shows a brilliant way our pubs work with our customers and our communities to tackle waste and reduce the impact on the environment.
Collection points
“These tubs are traditionally given over the festive season so it’s ideal for our pubs to act as collection points at the start of the year.”
Some 1,600 Greene Kings nationwide participated in the fundraising efforts between January and February this year, with the pubs acting as drop-off points for the tubs.
The venture also saw Greene King partner with recycling company, co-cre8, which specialises in the reutilising of polypropylene tubs into granulated plastic for Tub2Pub, with the granules then used to make outdoor furniture by DCW Polymers.
Greene King stated Tub2Pub demonstrated the firm’s “environmental ambitions” with a commitment to reduce Scope 1,2 and 3 greenhouse gas and emissions (direct and indirect) by 2023 through science-based target initiatives and a net zero target of 2040.
Fundraising target
Earlier this month, the pubco announced it had raised more than £5,000 for Macmillan by hosting a charity golf tournament, organised by members of Greene King’s Pub Partners operations team in the south-east.
In addition, last month saw Greene King hit its £1m fundraising target for the charity’s Emergency Grant’s Appeal, bringing the total amount raised over the last 11 years of the pubco’s partnership with Macmillan to more than £14.5m
Fairman-Smith added: “Tub2Pub is good for customers, the environment and good for charity.
“Thank you to everyone who has helped us reduce the number of tubs going to landfill and raise money for Macmillan at the same time.”
