A spokesperson for the pub said: “Unfortunately, we have completely flooded due to the recent bad weather. We will not be able to open until this is dealt with. Please bear with us whilst we assess the situation.”
The owners were forced to shut the doors two days ago. However, they thanked members of the community.
The spokesperson continued: “Huge thank you to Scott from Grime To Shine Roofing and Cleaning, who jumped right in to save the day and spent hours helping us with his equipment. Adrian from Blackwood Rugby Football Club who brought us a wet and dry and leant us a hand.
“To everyone who brought us towels down we are so grateful. Our amazing bartender Neil and his family, our family and friends who dropped everything and rushed down.”
Community care
They said the pub felt “so supported and loved” by the community, adding: “As you can imagine the clean-up is going to be intense, but I'm sure we can pull through this together.”
The hailstorm in Pontllanfraith saw giant hailstones hit the village. The Bird in Hand lost its power, and hailstones stacked up outside the building, making it impossible to open the front door, reported The Daily Mail.
Thunderstorm chaos
Staff then had to battle water as the pub became flooded in the storm.
Well-wishers flocked to Facebook to offer their support. “Sorry to hear this, what a nightmare,” said one. “Good luck with the clean-up,” another added.
The pub said they would continue to post updates on the situation.
Thunderstorms swept across the UK yesterday after the Met Office issued a yellow weather thunderstorm alert for much of the country.
