Greene King is launching a competition which will allow some people aged 66 and over to bag free food and drink during the 2022 World Cup.

Exactly 66 fans over the age of 66 will be picked as the official ‘Lucky Fan’ in their local Greene King pub, receiving a £100 gift card to spend during the tournament.

What’s more, these fans will score a framed certificate as a keepsake for their support of the England team who they would have seen win the World Cup in 1966.

Greene King Sports marketing controller Chris Conchie said the World Cup always brings excitement levels to fever pitch, and the company couldn’t wait to welcome fans through their doors across the country to show support for England.

Reason to cheer

He added: “As the home of pub sport, we wanted to give the longest-serving England fans something to cheer about as we head towards the World Cup, sharing their first-hand experiences of one of the greatest sporting moments in England’s history.”

The pubco has joined forces with former England star Geoff Hurst who commented: “The World Cup is so much more than a football tournament, it’s a moment that unites the country and brings together friends and families in support of our team.

“This competition is a special thank you to reward fans from 1966, letting them enjoy the 2022 World Cup in style at their local Greene King sports pub – plus they may just be the lucky charm we need to see us back to glory!”

Celebrating sport

The deadline to enter or nominate someone as a ‘Lucky Fan’ is 31 October. This can be done through filling out a form on the Greene King website.

The pubco also celebrated the England Euros through dishing out free pints to those with the same surnames as England team players.

Some 810 venues offered the freebie, which took place throughout the tournament from 6 July to 31 July 2022.
