Raise a glass: St Austell Brewery puts Cornwall on the map at World Beer Awards

St Austell Brewery has put Cornwall on the world stage after four of its beers took home medals at this year’s World Beer Awards, including a gold for Big Job double IPA.

The internationally recognised World Beer Award were held in London last week. Big Job was named Country Winner and Gold Winner in the Imperial/Double IPA category. Furthermore, Proper Job IPA and Mena Dhu stout scored silver medals, while korev lager earned a bronze.

Big Job double IPA also came third in the Alpha King Challenge on 15 August. The competition, run by 3 Floyds Brewing, saw more than 80 breweries from across Europe enter to be ranked among the world’s greatest hoppy beers.

St Austell also earned silvers for its flagship Tribute pale ale and Big Job double IPA at the British Bottlers’ Institute Awards in July. Korev lager was awarded a diploma.

St Austell Brewery brewing director Georgina Young said the company was “proud” to represent Cornwall on the world stage this year, with the international recognition a result of many years of hard work from the team’s brewers and beer quality experts.

Pushing boundaries

“Although I recognise that these beers were created before I joined the brewery in 2019, my team and I continue to push the boundary on continuous improvement and raise the bar on quality across all our beers – from grain to glass,” said Young.

She continued: “The fact that we’ve won eight awards in the past month reflects the dedication and talent of our teams in Cornwall and Bath. I’m very proud of them and the journey that we’re on together.”

Senior shift

This comes after the brewery announced a new leadership team alongside its 175th acquisition last week. The changes in the senior team have meant Andrew Turner – who joined the business in March 2020 as managing director of beer and brands – has been promoted to a newly created role – chief operating officer.

He will oversee all of St Austell Brewery’s day-to-day operations, across the beer and pub estate.

Furthermore, Paul Harbottle has been appointed the company’s first commercial director. He joins with a wealth of experience over the past two decades from across the sector including senior roles at JD Wetherspoon, Bermondsey Pub Company and Ei Group.
