Double joy: Salcombe has been recognised in both European and SIBA competitions
Devon-based brewer Salcombe Brewery Co has scooped a gold medal at the 2022 European Beer Challenge for its Pilsner beer following hot on the heels of a gold for Belgica, its small batch Belgian Pale Ale, at the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) Awards.

Salcombe Brewery managing director Jordan Mace said: “It is a tribute to our great brew team, led by Sam Beaman, that two of our newest beers, Pilsner and Belgica, have picked-up golds in two separate prestigious awards.

“We are passionate about consistently producing top-quality beers and offering our customers something different to try alongside our range of permanent beers, and these awards, judged by leading industry experts, are testament to the brew team’s hard work, creativity and focus on quality.”

Cask and keg brewer

Salcombe Brewery Co produces a range of cask ale and keg products at its innovative Estuary View brewery, which nestles in the Devon countryside above the Salcombe Estuary.

Salcombe Pilsner (ABV 5.4%), which also won a Gold at the Taste of the West Awards 2022, uses British malt and is said to have a delicate floral and herbal aroma, derived from the noble Czech and German hops. It is claimed the gentle malt flavour complements the bitter-sweet palate, culminating in a crisp, dry finish.

Rigorous blind tasting

Belgica (ABV 5%) is a light amber beer that is said to have a smooth malt base, gentle hop character and is flavoured heavily from the yeast. Salcombe said it boasts a gentle, toasty and nutty aroma from the malt, while the yeast brings “an unmistakable spicy and fruity aroma to the beer with hints of pear drop and banana”.

The European Beer Challenge brings together beer buyers from Europe and beers from across the globe for a judging process that subjects each product to a rigorous blind tasting.

Meanwhile, the SIBA National Independent Beer Awards judges a huge range of beers across a number of styles in separate cask, keg and bottle and can competitions.
