Previous winner of Great British Menu, Ruth Hansom, heads the Princess of Shoreditch which serves seasonal, flavourful dishes. The gastropub was dubbed ‘Newcomer of the Year’ at the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropub awards, with judges expecting it to become a regular in the Top 50 List.
Collecting awards
The Harwood Arms is London’s only Michelin-starred pub, with British produce the key focus for head chef Jake Leach. The venue has collected an impressive host of accolades and this year secured 15th spot in the Top 50 Gastropub list.
Three courses cost just £55 at the pub, with two coming in at approximately £42. The pub has also been the training ground for top chefs including Sally Abe and James Cochran.
Marksman Public House which boasts a hidden roof terrace and serves British classics including pies, seafood platters and roasts, is owned by Tom Harris and Jon Rotheram, and just missed out on the Estrella Damm’s Top 50 Gastropub list in 62nd place.
Celebrating pubs
The pair previously worked at Fergus Henderson’s London restaurant St John, and reopened the pub in 2015 after extensive refurbishment and the creation of an upstairs dining room designed by designer Martino Gamper.
Sites owned by current or former publicans can also be spotted on the SquareMeal accumulation of top 100 restaurants. Celebrity publican Tom Kerridge’s Bar & Grill in Westminster, central London, bags 36th place, with former Harwood Arms chef Sally Abe’s restaurant the Pem taking 25th spot.
The SquareMeal awards are annual and are curated using a mix of the opinions of in-house critics and thousands of votes from diners.
