The event, which is run by PubAid and its charity partner Shelter, will now be held from 9 to 15 May to maximize the opportunity for pubs and charities as the country emerges from the latest wave of Covid infections and trading restrictions.
PubAid founder Des O’Flanagan said: “All of us at PubAid and Shelter have been champing at the bit to run the quiz again after Covid prevented us from holding it 2021.
“However, after taking soundings from the industry, it became clear pubs are still battling with the impact of Omicron and focusing on the day-to-day rather than an event in the future.
Regrouping after Covid
“By moving the World’s Biggest Pub Quiz to May, we give licensees a chance to regroup after Covid and plan a fantastic event that brings customers into their pubs and raises money for Shelter and other charities.”
PudAid chose to partner with homeless charity Shelter as it was estimated 91 families became homeless every day in England following Covid lockdowns.
While pubs have been encouraged to host the quiz in aid of Shelter, they also have the freedom to support another charity, or divide funds raised between Shelter and a cause closer to home, as well as the freedom to host the event itself anytime in May.
O’Flanagan added: “Although we’re promoting 9 to 15 May as quiz week, licensees can choose to run it any time that month, or in the first week of June to coincide with the long weekend of Platinum Jubilee celebrations.”
Pubs signed up to host the World’s Biggest Pub Quiz, which is free for publicans to run, will receive a free fundraising pack including posters and social media assets to help with the event.
Coming together
This year’s World’s Biggest Pub Quiz also teamed up with online quiz platform Kwizzbit, allowing licensees to host a traditional pub quiz via smartphones.
The World’s Biggest Pub Quiz was launched in 2016 and has raised a total of £750,000 for hundreds of charities and since 2009, PubAid has promoted UK pubs as a force for good in communities, raising over £100m per year for charities and contributing a further £40m to grassroots sport.
Shelter head of community fundraising Max Newton said: “Everyone at Shelter is absolutely thrilled to be partnering with the World’s Biggest Pub Quiz in May.
“We’re looking forward to communities across the country coming together in their local pub to have fun and quiz. The money they raise will help us be there for anyone facing homelessness.”
