Doctor doctor: NHS staff receive discounted meals as a gesture of thanks for their festive hard work

A pub and restaurant group is showing its gratitude to all NHS workers for their dedicated work over the festive period by offering 50% off all meals throughout January.

The Chestnut Group is running the offer at all its sites and NHS staff are asked just to show their NHS card to enjoy the half price discount on all main courses during lunch or dinner, Monday to Thursday.

The Packhorse Inn in Moulton near Newmarket, the Rupert Brooke in Grantchester on the outskirts of Cambridge, and the Northgate in Bury St Edmunds are just some of the East Anglia-based properties that are making the gesture of thanks to punters who work long hours in the healthcare service.

Owe it to the staff

Chestnut Group founder Philip Turner said: “We are very proud of the NHS in this region and we owe so much to all the staff of the NHS who dedicate themselves to our wellbeing throughout the festive period.

“So, we feel it is our turn to say ‘thank you’ to all the staff by offering this discount throughout our properties in East Anglia.”

Other sites include the Black Lion in Long Melford, the Westleton Crown in Westleton, the Ship at Dunwich, the Eight Bells in Saffron Walden, the Weeping Willow in Barrow and the Crown in Stoke-by-Nayland.

Other celebrations

In June 2019, The Morning Advertiser reported NHS workers were also able to enjoy a free pint at one London tavern in July when the service hit its 71st year.

NHS workers were able to order a free pint or soft drink at the Pembury Tavern, in Hackney, east London, to mark the service’s birthday – which was on Friday 5 July – and started on Monday 1 July through to Friday.

The NHS employees were all able to enjoy a 25% discount on all food served at the pub.
