Rum launch: two organic rums produced by the largest employer in south Belize are now available to the UK on-trade

Two organic craft rums produced in the heart of the Belizean rainforest are available to the UK on-trade.

Sustainably produced at The Copal Tree Organic Distillery in Belize from rainforest canopy water, yeast, and genetically modified organism free heirloom sugar cane, Copalli has launched two rums in the UK.

Alongside a white rum, Copalli has unveiled a barrel-rested rum aged in American oak ex-Bourbon barrels, which already find themselves featured in London venues Quaglino’s in St James’s, the Gibson in Old Street and Laki Kane in Islington.

The products are sustainably sourced, distilled, barrelled, aged and bottled at Copal Tree’s distillery – a zero-impact site that supports full-circle conversion of waste and is powered by regenerative biomass – at the heart of 20,000 acres of tropical rainforest in Belize with sugar cane used to produce the rum grown on the neighbouring Copal Tree Farm.

The distillery and neighbouring Copal Tree sites are the largest employer in south Belize, providing more than 100 jobs to locals and provides educational grants for children to attend high school.

As reported by The Morning Advertiser, rum sales have grown in the UK to the point that data insight professionals CGA predicted golden rum sales would outstrip gin by 2020, with the spirit on course to break the £1bn sales barrier in 2018.

Floral, fresh, fruity

"Copalli Rum is a truly organic rum made in the middle of the Belizean rainforest using fresh sugar cane juice and this really shows in the aroma and taste,” Georgi Radev, creative director of cocktail bar Laki Kane, explains.

“When you open the bottle, the fresh cane aroma coming from it is just mesmerising. It really feels like you are there at the sugar cane fields in the rainforest.

“The taste is very delicate for Agricole rum, you taste the fresh sugar cane, with floral, fresh and fruity notes.

“This is absolutely perfect for a Daiquiri and a Mojito. It's amazing for fruity tropical drinks, but you can also use it in classy cocktails like a Negroni and Martini.”

Copalli, which debuted in the US in August 2018, is exclusively imported to the UK by 10 Degrees C Ltd and is available through Master of Malt.

The launch follows the release of two exclusive debut rums by gin producer Nelson’s Distillery and RedLeg spiced rum extending its range with the launch of a caramelised pineapple flavour beverage.
