TV chef James Martin claims pub serves ‘UK’s best’ scampi
Scampi is a classic pub basket meal and has soared in popularity since the 1970s – even becoming a staple in gastropubs up and down the country.
On his TV show, James Martin’s Great British Adventure, the Yorkshire-born chef travels across the UK seeking out the best foods on offer.
His recent revelation claims that the best scampi in the UK happens to be cooked by a pub chef.
Instead of visiting one of Yorkshire’s five Michelin-starred restaurants, Martin went to his mother Sue’s local, the Stapylton Arms in Wass, North Yorkshire, where the best selling item on the menu is scampi – and for a very good reason.
And the dish is clearly a favourite with Martin as well.
“I think it’s the best scampi I’ve ever tasted,” Martin revealed.
“It’s not a Michelin-starred restaurant, it’s not of that – it’s just a great place to have scampi and a pint.”
Michelin-starred chef Lisa Goodwin-Allen, who works for prestigious Lancashire restaurant Northcote, was with Martin when he explained: "I wanted to bring you here for two reasons.
“First, because it serves the best scampi in Britain, full stop – the other reason – it’s my mother’s favourite.”
James Martin’s Great British Adventure is available to watch on ITV Hub.
