Trusted Housesitters – a global community of pet sitters founded in 2010 with the aim of helping fellow animal lovers travel – celebrated the launch of its new app by whittling down a list of 54,000 locations recommended by users to determine the most 100 pet-friendly places on the planet.
The list, topped by the Eden Project in Cornwall, contains 30 British locations in total, including regular tourist haunts such as Cornwall’s Lost Gardens of Heilgan, Lake Vyrnwy in Wales and Loch Ness, Scotland.
While a number of cafés were included in the final list – such as Gail’s Bakery in Hove, East Sussex and The Bay Café in Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset – the Camel in Bethnal Green, east London, was 65th on the list, and was the highest ranked pub.
The Camel, a restored Victorian pub, prides itself on its gourmet pie and mash menu, which includes fillings such as steak and chorizo, and Thai green curry.
Debbie Connor, the Camel pub’s owner, told Metro: “We’re a really pet-friendly pub. We’re near parks with lots of outdoor seating.
“Dogs and cats are very welcome inside and we always offer them bowls of water.
“My cats are called Pie and Steve, and Steve particularly loves dogs. There was a bulldog under the table the other day and Steve went to sit with him and drink out of his bowl, we have a really friendly animal and human community.”
