The Dolphin, Newbury, opens after £500k refurbishment

The Dolphin in Newbury has opened following a half million pound transformation by Buff & Bear Saloons and Star Pubs & Bars.

The restored listed building in Newbury will become the pubco’s second opening with Star Pubs & Bars.

The Dolphin is made up of five quirky reception rooms – such as the Barholemew Bar which uses old pew seating - designed to host private meetings and functions, quizzes, food and drink classes among other events, as well as five boutique bedrooms.

The venue’s drink offering combines draught beers such as Heineken, Moretti and Lagunitas with local cask ales from SIBA members. In addition, the menu boasts an extensive wine selection, 20 gins, craft bottled beers and a diverse cocktail list.

A separate ‘Mindful drinking list’ includes mocktails, Turner Hardy and Co tomato juices as well as low and no-alcohol beers.

Suppliers for the Dolphin’s food menu include Isle of Wight’s Tomato Stall, Honesty Bakery, West Berkshire Brewery and Chalk Stream Foods. The meals on offer include fresh and healthy light meals and more hearty mains.

At the weekend Bloody Mary brunches and fixed-price Sunday lunches will be available.

Ed Turner of Buff & Bear Saloons commented: “We’ve been blown away by the early responses. We’re disrupting Newbury with a look that reflects our personalities and enjoyment of life. It’s unlike any of the pubs in the area. It’s more like coming to stay for the weekend at our house or going out for an evening in a modern-day members’ club.

“We’ve also taken this individual artisanal approach to our food and drink which includes fantastic local produce, be it cask ales, spirits or fresh crab and trout.”

Neil Convery, regional operations director of Star Pubs & Bars, added: “Ed and Buffy have done it again. They’ve created another outstanding pub providing many reasons for people to visit and spend time eating, drinking and socialising in great comfort and style.”
