The directors of Newcastle craft brewery Wylam have announced plans for a new microbrewery underneath the Tyne Bridge.

The project is part of a wider development being undertaken by Rob Cameron and Dave Stone. The development will see the iconic setting of Hillgate Quays, Gateshead, transformed into a vibrant container community housing a number of independent operators.

The scheme will create employment for more than 100 people and is aiming to open in time for the Great Exhibition of the North, a three-month showcase of art, innovation, industry and culture, this summer.

Exciting and innovative development

A microbrewery, taproom, restaurant, hawkers market and custom build bike & coffee shop are just some of the attractions that will feature at the new development.

Speaking about the project, dubbed ‘By The River Brew Co’, Wylam’s Rob Cameron said: “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring life to Hillgate Quays with this exciting and innovative development, ahead of the planned arena, conference and exhibition centre for Gateshead Quays.”

“The exhibition will be a real moment in history for our region and By The River Brew Co will be one of it’s many legacies.”

Once completed, By The River Brew Co will remain in place for four years.

Northern brewers collaborate

Earlier this year, Wylam announced details of a new collaboration series with eight craft breweries from the north of England.

The product will involve Wylam producing collaboration beers with breweries such as Buxton, Magic Rock and Cloudwater, and will also run in conjunction with the Great Exhibition of the North this summer.

More information about the new microbrewery will be released in the coming weeks - for further updates sign up to the project’s newsletter.
