Triple win for Waxy’s as operator collects Irish pub gongs

Waxy O’Connor’s has been named Irish Pub of the Year in the UK at the Irish Pubs Global Federation (IPGF) awards.

With locations in London, Manchester and Glasgow, the pub chain scooped another three awards for Best Irish Whiskey Experience at its London pub, Best Food Experience at its Glasgow premises, and Best Cocktail Experience at Waxy’s Little Sister, also in London.

Waxy O’Connor’s, named after an 18th century Dublin candle maker, is run by Glendola Leisure. Managing director Alexander Salussolia said: “These awards are a real opportunity to shine a light on the very best operators in Irish hospitality from around the world, while recognising the best products, service and individuals responsible for ensuring that the delivery of these is second to none.”

Public nominations 

This year’s awards was a two-day event with pub owners, managers, staff and investors coming from all over the world to attend a short seminar, two-day trade tours, and the gala awards dinner.

There were 16,000 nominations from the public who nominated almost 600 pubs around the world in 12 categories from five regions - Ireland, UK, Europe, North America and Rest of World.

More than 400 attended the dinner at the Mansion House in Dublin.

Some 120 pub owners and managers attended two days of trade tours.

Other award winners were: Best Marketing Campaign, O’Shea’s in Manchester; Best Bar Person, Tomas Leydon at Auld Shillelagh, Stoke Newington, London; Best Craft Beer Experience, the Star Fishponds in Bristol; Best Sports Experience, Dropkick Murphys in Edinburgh; Best Entertainment Experience, Malone’s in Edinburgh; Best Food/Gastro Pub, Malones in Glasgow; Best Irish Community Pub, the Liffey in Liverpool; Best Supplier of Products, Bizimply; Best Supplier of Services, Ol Irish Pubs.

The overall global winner was Scholars Lounge, Rome.
