The comment, made by the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR) chief executive Kate Nicholls, comes after pubs and bars opened their doors on Monday (22 May) night following a suicide bombing at Manchester Arena – where at least 22 people were killed and 59 injured.
“Once again hospitality businesses opened their doors to people in crisis, providing aid to those who needed it and helping people get home safely,” she said.
“Hospitality venues have been a focal point for members of the public in need of help recently and venues have been very helpful in providing assistance and reassurance.”
Security guidance
Following the attack, described by Prime Minister Theresa May as “one of the worst ever experienced in British history”, the ALMR has advised its members to consult security guidance and make sure staff members are briefed appropriately.
Businesses should check the National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO) for information, with further guidance for hospitality businesses also available on the ALMR website.
The advice comes hours after the former head of the NaCTSO, Chris Phillips, warned pubs and bars to “boost vigilance” and increase their security.
Nicholls also encouraged businesses to check the NaCTSO website for information on how to contact their local police force to request security guidance and training.
“The ALMR will be disseminating any information it receives and is regular contact with police forces and authorities regarding public safety and security,” she said.
