Amsterdam Helder, made by Amsterdam-based De Prael, is a Pilsner-style 4.5% ABV beer that contains ginger and hydrating sea salt, claimed to help alleviate the symptoms of a hangover.
De Prael sales and marketing manager Thomas Gesink told The Morning Advertiser: "At first customers were a bit shocked, they had never heard of it before, but people were really enthusiastic and willing to try it. It suddenly got a lot of media attention."
Plans for the beer began two months ago after topical Dutch television programme Galileo contacted the brewery, asking them if it was possible to brew a hangover-free ale.
After research and investigation, Amsterdam Helder was launched three weeks ago.
Growing trend
After selling a ‘successful’ first batch, Gesink said there could be potential to expand the range and export it to the UK.
The company is also planning to set up another brewery on the west side of the Dutch capital within a few months, which would present them with the opportunity to brew more beers.
He added: “We're currently thinking of making another few batches which will be available around Christmas and New Year's Eve when people are drinking a bit more."
‘Heaven’s Water’
The brewers are always striving to develop something different, Gesink added.
Another beer, for example, Hemelswater: Code Blond, was made from ultra-filtered rainwater and caught the attention of The Guardian in July this year.
The 5.7% ABV bitter-blond, which translates to ‘heaven’s water’, was temporarily exported to the UK, said Gesink.
