Andrew Pern, of the Star Inn at Harome, North Yorkshire, has opened 80-cover pub and restaurant, Mr P’s Curious Tavern, serving a range of small plates, in a Grade II listed building in the centre of York.
'Haute' dog
The site’s menu features dishes such as Strasbourg ‘haute’ dog with juniper cabbage coleslaw, fried onions and brioche; risotto nero with squid sauté and coriander; steak tartare with smoked bacon and ‘HP Ripple’ ice cream; and corn-fed English chicken à la crème with Champignons Saisonniers.
A range of draught ales and bottled beers are available as well as an extensive variety of gins, wines and hot and soft drinks.
Pern opened his second site, 130-cover restaurant the Star Inn the City, also in York, in 2013.
He celebrated the Star Inn at Harome's 20th anniversary earlier this year with a special tasting menu of his 'signature dishes', which included ‘Milk-poached’ Hodgson’s of Hartlepool natural smoked haddock with champ, poached egg and mustard velouté; grilled black pudding with pan-fried foie gras, Pickering watercress, apple and vanilla chutney and scrumpy reduction; and Harome-shot fallow deer with baked ginger parkin, confit blood orange, charred leeks and carrot purée.
Oxford Blue
Earlier this year chef Steven Ellis, who previously worked at the Star Inn, announced plans to open his own gastropub, the Oxford Blue, in in Berkshire later in 2016.
He told The Morning Advertiser: “Working at the Star Inn at Harome with Andrew Pern was where I fell in love with the pub – I’d never been to a Michelin-starred pub before and never realised what it was all about.
“I want to try and recreate something similar to the Star Inn but in my own way,” he added.
