Pub name changed to Pubby McPubface

A licensee has changed the name of his pub in Wrexham, north Wales, to reflect a poll in which a ship was dubbed ‘Boaty McBoatface’ earlier this year.

Peter Daniels took the Newbridge Arms pub over in June and decided to rebrand the site, according to reports.

A customer mentioned a website to Daniels, which listed possible names for London restaurants and Pubby McPubface was on the list.

Following an internet search, it was found that no other pubs in the country had the name: “So I thought if we’re going to be daft about it, we might as well be totally daft about it,” Daniels said.

He added that the new name had gone down well: “The reception has been excellent. It has caused so much of a giggle. We’ve got a lot of people stopping to take photos of the sign.”

Police response

It was also reported that the local police have appreciated the sign too because a member of the force told Daniels’ wife Alix that his colleague would have a “right giggle” at his photo of the new sign when get got back to the station.

The inspiration for Pubby McPubface came from a poll in April to name the Natural Environment Research Council's new vessel, Boaty McBoatface.

Bit of fun

Daniels said giving the pub an unusual new name was “thinking outside the box”.

He added: “You’ve got to stand out somehow. We’re not trying to demonise other pubs or put them down, we decided to have a bit of fun and get people talking.”

“They say there’s no such thing as bad publicity, which I agree with.”
