How celebrating whiskies from long-lost Scottish distilleries wins top awards

The independent whisky firm produces present-day versions of whiskies from long-closed distilleries from across Scotland.

Lossit, part of its classic range, is a combination of aged single malts styled on the distillery in Ballgrant on Islay, which closed in 1867, and has a peaty flavour with oily sweetness, zest and spice.

According to the Lost Distillery: "(Lossit was) Founded in 1817, Lossit​ was the biggest producer of whisky on Islay in the industry’s formative years and lasted for half a century until it was silenced in 1867.

"The longest surviving and most successful of Islay’s farm-distilleries, Lossit​ was part of the transformation of Islay’s reputation from an outpost of smugglers to a leading force in the whisky industry."

The company's collection includes spirits from lost distilleries such as Auchnagie​, Towiemore​, Stratheden​, Jericho and Gerston as well as Lossit.

More than 100 whisky distilleries have permanently closed in the last century alone, mainly due to the effects of political policy and war, according to the Lost Distillery Company.

The Lost Distillery Company is owned by parent organisation, Crucial Drinks, a boutique drinks business based in Scotland specialising in whisky and rum, including luxury spirit brands such as Grenada Six Saints Rum and West Indies Rum and Cane Merchants.
