Petition to save live music pub attracts worldwide interest

The Barrels Alehouse in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, has received almost 3,000 signatures including some from Australia, Canada, America and Norway to save live music at the pub.

The petition follows a noise abatement order served on the pub after complaints from residents and an investigation by Northumberland County Council, the Berwick Advertiser reported.

Petition signees Stephen Duffy, from Australia, said live music was important and Candace MacDonald, from Kentville, Canada, said: "This place is legendary. The people who moved in knew it was a loud, live music venue. How dare they try to take live music from the Barrels. This place is a major part of music history. I'm shocked and appalled at this foolish decision."

Simon Vickers from the Barrels Alehouse told the Berwick Advertiser: "I don't dispute that, at times, people living near the pub will be able to hear music but we do take steps to limit the impact by limiting it to twice a week and at specific times."

The petition was started by Matthew Robson and its aim is to appeal the decision made by Northumberland County Council to ban live music at the pub.

Acts from across the world

The petition web page states the pub's regular nights of live music gave regulars the opportunity to hear acts from out of town from all over the world.

Fellow petition signee Tore Andre Setsaas, from Oslo, Norway, said: "Great places should be kept."

The Barrels claims to give young and local performers a chance to show their talents and their music gives a "much-needed source of entertainment". The pub also says the venue is the life and soul of the music scene in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Plea

Angela House from Windsor, California added: "I'm signing because I fly from California every year to stay with my best friend who lives next door to the Barrels and love to go there to listen to the great music they have there.

"It will be very sad not to have live music at the Barrels any more. Please keep the live bands."
